A contract for the supply of twelve different fruit and vegetables for consumption by school pupils as part of the Department of Health sponsored "School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme” Fruit Suppliers will be required to deliver fruit and vegetables to regional distributors (who will be appointed following a separate tender process) and who will onward deliver the fruit and vegetables to schools For purposes of organization the supply and distribution areas are divided into 21 different regional areas covering the whole of England.

Please note that the number of maximum suppliers as set out in II.1.4 is provided as an estimate only. Tenderers should refer to section 3.5 of the Invitation to Tender for details of the scores which tenderers will need to obtain in order to be appointed to the Framework Agreement. NHS Supply Chain reserves therefore the right to appoint more suppliers to the Framework Agreement in the event that more than 40 reach the minimum score for appointment which is set out in the ITT.

The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme in England is sponsored by the Department of Health and was launched following the ‘Choosing Health’ white paper in 2000.
Initially 42 000 000 GBP of National Lottery money helped develop the Scheme region by region and in January 2004 the Department of Health announced that it would sponsor the Scheme when the Lottery assistance ended in March 2005.
As of March 2010 2 072 342 Key Stage One children in 16 233 establishments consume a portion of fresh fruit or vegetables every day.
The Scheme now covers and NHS Supply Chain supply to over 99 % of all eligible schools / children at Key Stage One (pupils aged between 3 and 6 years old).
The fruit/vegetables that will be required are:
- apple,
- easy peel citrus,
- pear,
- banana,
- carrot,
- carrot prepared,
- tomato,
- strawberry,
- sugar snap peas,
- raisins,
- prepared pineapple,
- prepared melon.
The Framework Agreement will be between NHS Supply Chain and the Supplier however the Supplier will be expected to supply the required fruit and vegetables to the relevant nominated distributor for their regional area (that distributor having been appointed following a separate tender process).
Tenders and all supporting documentation for the contract must be priced in sterling and written in English. Any agreement entered into will be considered a contract made in England according to English law and will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the English Courts. NHS Supply Chain is not liable for any costs incurred by those expressing an interest in tendering for this contract opportunity. NHS Supply Chain reserves the right to terminate the procurement process (or part of it) to change the basis of and the procedures for the procurement process at any time or to procure the subject matter of the contract by alternative means if it appears that it can be more advantageously procured by alternative means. The most economically advantageous or any tender will not automatically be accepted.
