Introduction and Summary
1.1.
The contractor will manufacture, supply, deliver, position, install, test and commission one 200kV Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) at the Pirbright Institute, UK (hereafter referred to as ‘Pirbright').
1.2.
The TEM covered by this specification will provide Pirbright with an electron microscope suitable for room temperature imaging of resin sections, room temperature electron tomography (ET) of resin sections, cryo-TEM of vitrified thin films and cryo-ET of frozen cell monolayers. Included in the tender should be the hardware and software to enable the microscope to be operated in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) mode, although this is not an essential requirement.
1.3.
The microscope will be provided with a lanthanum boride electron source, although a quote for an equivalent instrument with field emission source should be provided.
1.4.
The microscope will be used to conduct globally significant cutting edge research in the area of veterinary and medical virology under Specified Animal Pathogen Order level 4 (SAPO4) and Advisory Committee on Dangerous Pathogens level 3 (ACDP3) high containment conditions.
1.5.
The microscope should be provided with a fully tested decontamination system.
1.6.
