The University of Bristol is seeking to establish an institutional lecture capture service. The lecture capture system should enable recording in teaching rooms and lecture theatres, on individual staff computers, and by staff and students using a range of devices off campus. Initially the project will deploy lecture capture functionality in 79 teaching spaces by the end of AY 2015-16, with further teaching spaces added on an incremental basis from summer 2016. In teaching rooms and lecture theatres the system will be integrated with existing or adapted audio visual and computer systems. The lecture capture system should capture a range of sources such as the lecturer's voice, the podium PC or lecturer's laptop, and from a visualiser or video camera.
In addition to creating lecture recordings, the system should be capable of live streaming events. Both user-initiated and automated, scheduled recording are required. The system should incorporate a browser-based interface for management of recordings, and for simple editing.
The lecture capture system will serve as a repository for recordings, and should be capable of delivering media to a range of popular devices and browsers, including Windows and Mac OS, tablets and other mobile devices. Optimized viewing that adapts to the end-user device and network conditions is a requirement, and playback should include synchronization of all relevant streams.
It must be possible to easily integrate with Blackboard, the University's VLE, in order to surface finished recordings in a predefined area, for example to ensure only students enrolled on specific unit may access the associated recordings. The system will need to interface with the university's authentication system for access control, and our timetabling system Scientia Syllabus Plus.
The service will support intensive and widespread use of lecture capture across our distributed-campus university and must be able to accommodate periods of high demand, eg viewing peaks during student revision and examination periods.
The supplier must have demonstrable experience of offering easy-to-use, resilient and large-scale lecture capture provision. The University of Bristol requires a robust and reliable lecture capture service to be in place by end AY 2014/15 (first phase go live Sept 2015), with the option to trial a small functional deployment at the beginning of AY 2014-15.
