1.2 The Project will involve the construction of three new buildings:
Academic Building (Building VS1)
The Academic Building, approximately 7,150 m2 in area, will include academic offices, flexible teaching spaces, auditoria, containment level II and III teaching and research laboratories.
The building will also contain a Clinical Skills Centre with offices and laboratories, including a locomotion laboratory, a haptic laboratory and a personal skills training centre including a mock veterinary surgery.
The building will have a central atrium with café, reception area leading to student and administrative staff facilities.
The Architect's representative design of VS1 is reproduced below.
Animal Management Centre (Building VS2)
The Animal Management Centre, approximately 2,500 m2 in area, will provide containment level II and III pathology teaching and research laboratories, including associated anatomy laboratory and teaching facilities.
Clinical Skills Centre (Building VS3)
The Clinical Skills Centre, approximately 1,500 m2 in area, will incorporate a state-of-the-art Clinical Skills Unit, which will include an animal examination area, a locomotion/mechanics laboratory, adjoining which will be a small student-managed farm complex.
1.3 The Project's infrastructure will involve earthworks, drainage, utilities and IT connections and the construction of roads, cycle ways, footpaths and landscaping to reflect the masterplan for the Manor Park campus.
1.4 The estimated construction value of the Project is around £20m exclusive of the University's direct fitting-out works, fees and VAT.
1.5 The University have employed a Project Team comprising the professional firms listed in the PQQ to develop the design of the Veterinary School facilities, obtain planning permission and prepare detailed design to enable the appointment of the Design and Build Contractor to take place.
1.6 Expressions of interest are sought from suitably experienced contractors to complete the design and construct the Project under a single stage design and construct contract basis. The form of contract will be the JCT Design & Build Contract 2011 Edition.
1.7 Once selected by the University, the chosen Design and Build Contractor will be able to appoint the Architect and the Structural Engineer if required by the Contractor to complete the architectural design and structural engineering designs. The Building Services Engineer will remain as an advisor to the University during the construction phase, reviewing the Contractor's building services engineering designs and witnessing the testing and commissioning of the environmental services..
1.8 After the Contractor's selection, construction is intended to commence on site in January 2014, with completion of all the buildings by summer 2015 to enable the University to have access to the buildings to complete their fitting-out by September 2015, ready for the start of the University's academic year.
