University Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust has three hospital sites and two community settings. The Trust performed approximately 280,000 examinations in 2011/12 across all of its sites and additionally operates the North Lancashire and South Cumbria Breast screening service which involves approximately 145,000 examinations over 3 years.
The Trust's two main sites are 50 miles apart the Royal Lancaster Informary (RLI) and Furness General Hospital at Barrow (FGH). Additionally, the Westmorland General Hospital at Kendal (WGH) has limited Radiology services and the Queen Victoria Hospital at Morecambe (QVH) provides plan film and ultrsaound with Ulverston Community Hospital (Ulv) providing plain film only. The Breast Screening program is primarily based at RLI, FGH and WGH and supported by a single room at Whitegate Drive Community Centre and a two room trailer that covers Preston, Poulton and Blackpool Fylde and Wyre.
By tendering for a Radiology Managed Service, the aim of the Trust is to introduce a more efficient, cost effective and standardised service that will provide the following clinical benefits:
