Organisationally, CUL comprises the main University Library and its 21 affiliated faculty and departmental libraries. Across the University of Cambridge, there are over 100 libraries, including non-affiliated faculty, departmental and institute libraries as well as 31 College libraries.
1 of the key strategic priorities is ‘to add value to key areas of teaching and research by driving forward and embedding library innovation’. This is closely linked to building a deeper understanding of the changing needs and behaviours of our library users, which has become critical to planning the strategic development of our library services and facilities.
In order to make this possible, CUL has established the FutureLib Innovation Programme. FutureLib seeks to improve awareness and usage of all library services and to emphasise the necessity of an ecosystem which better integrates digital and physical resources, services and spaces, in order to create a more streamlined user experience.
The programme sees staff from across the University's library community come together with a team of designers and developers to test ideas and concepts with library users through periods of rapid prototyping. The FutureLib programme has now become an established initiative, which the Library seeks to develop further by ensuring a sustainable programme of activities.
