Conwy County Borough Council has now appointed a contractor for the Coastal Defence Maintenance - 4 Year Term Service Contract.
Conwy County Borough Council manage over 50 km of artificial sea defence infrastructure which includes the promenades at Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Llanfairfechan and Penmaenmawr.
Under the Coast Protection Act 1949, the Employer has permissive powers to conduct coast protection works for the protection of land as it deems necessary, although the Council is under no obligation to carry out such works.
Currently, within the domain of the Council, the shoreline management plan is to ‘hold the line’ under which the best effort will be made to maintain the existing coastline morphology.
The Employers current coastal defence policy is the proactive maintenance of the existing coastal defence infrastructure whereby defects are identified and remedied as quickly as possible. Experience has shown that the type and frequency of coastal defence infrastructure defects are sufficiently predictable, that the maintenance thereof, lends itself to establishment of a term contract between the Employer and a suitably competent contractor.
The form of Contract for this commission is the NEC3 Term Service Contract June 2005 (with amendments April 2013).
The Service will comprise (but not limited to) the following general maintenance and repair works to the coastal defence assets of the Council:
- Beach management works to replenish, replace or remove beach material;
