The A5 WTC Archaeological Investigation involves the construction of offline dualling extending for approximately 37 km. The Scheme is divided into two sections; Section 1 is located between New Buildings and north of Strabane and Section 3 is located between the south of Omagh and Ballygawley The archaeological investigation works shall be undertaken in parallel with the construction of the scheme. The archaeological works are comprised of three phases:
Phase 1 includes site evaluation works, comprising localised strip and map, trial trenching and building recording. Phase 1 has been designed to investigate the potential impact of the scheme on recorded and unrecorded archaeological remains and to assist in the development of an appropriate scope of work to mitigate the effect of the scheme by archaeological excavation and recording of any archaeological remains which are revealed.
Phase 2 is mitigation works arising from the Phase 1 works which may include additional excavations.
Phase 3 is the assessment, analysis, reporting, publication and archiving of the archaeological discoveries of Phases 1 and 2, where appropriate.

The successful contractor's performance on the contract will be regularly monitored. If a contractor fails to reach satisfactory levels of contract performance they will be given a specified time to improve. If, after the specified time, they still fail to reach satisfactory levels of contract performance, the matter will be escalated to senior management in the Department for Regional Development for further action. If this occurs and their performance still does not improve to satisfactory levels within the specified period, it may be regarded as an act of grave professional misconduct and they may be issued with a Certificate of Unsatisfactory Performance and the contract may be terminated. The issue of a Certificate of Unsatisfactory Performance will result in the contractor being excluded from all procurement competitions being undertaken by Centres of Procurement Expertise on behalf of bodies covered by the Northern Ireland Procurement Policy for a period of 12 months from the date of issue of the certificate.
