II.1.4)Short description of the contract or purchase(s)Newcastle University has embarked upon the renovation of the Armstrong Building situated on the main campus. The building is one of the oldest buildings on campus and therefore is a grade II listed building. The building has 3 main floors with also two higher levels situated in the Knowles Tower along with a basement level also.
The intent is to raise the overall fitness for purpose of the building through appropriate and sympathetic restoration of the listed building features and through general uplift of corridors, lobbies, toilets and other circulation spaces.
As part of the renovation, damp will be treated and measures taken to improve the energy efficiency of the building through the use of low energy light fittings and better lighting controls and the installation of insulation.
The student experience is to be greatly improved by providing high quality open and cellular plan office accommodation, computing facilities, collaborative workspace and social space.
